Congress members held a protest march on Thursday demanding justice in the alleged gang rape of a student at South Calcutta Law College. The march, led by state Congress president Subhankar Sarkar, was headed towards the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. Protesters carried placards and raised slogans, seeking immediate action in the case.
The march was stopped by police personnel at Bowbazar. Following the halt, Congress workers blocked the road and continued their demonstration at the spot. No reports of violence or detentions were confirmed at the time of reporting.
Subhankar Sarkar alleged that both the Kolkata Police and the CBI were slow in investigating the gangrape case and the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He said, “Colleges in the state have become dens of illegal activities,” and claimed the incident at the law college could have been prevented if earlier complaints against the main accused had been acted upon.
